    • Dug up road stretch in PAU irks residents | Ludhiana NYOOOZ
      The half-dug road was not only causing inconvenience to motorists but also leading to accidents from the past many days. Although the road has not been re-carpeted fully today it was covered with sand as a temporary measure. “A portion of the road was dug many days ago and the work here is still incomplete. Either the work should be completed or the road patch should be repaired” said an employee from the university. “Actually there was no plan to install tiles on the road and it has been wrongly dug.

      Ludhiana February 19The Punjab Horticultural Postharvest Technology Centre (PHPTC) organised a training programme on postharvest management value addition and marketing of fruits and vegetables for “Apka Family Farmer” a Farmer Producer Company (FPC) from Himachal Pradesh. Dr BVC Mahajan Director said postharvest losses and marketing of fruits and vegetables are the major challenges faced by the farmers and need to be tackled with application of postharvest interventions such as appropriate packaging and storage techniques. Dr Ritu Tandon Dr Swati Kapoor and Dr Pooja delivered lectures on judicious use of pesticides processing and fresh cut technologies for fruits and vegetables. Dr Sandeep Mann and Dr PN Guru from CIPHET also discussed in detail about packaging requirements and problems of insect pest management in food products. Exposure visit to Namdhari Packhhouse Kohara Food Incubation Centre and Department of Processing and Food Engineering PAU Ludhiana were also arranged.
    • PAUTA slams delinking of pay scales | Ludhiana NYOOOZ
      Ludhiana February 19The Punjab Agricultural University Teachers' Association (PAUTA) along with Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Teachers' Association (GADVASUTA) held a protest against the delinking of pay scales of the university and college teachers from the 7th UGC pay scales. Teachers from both the universities participated in the protest to sensitise them about the present status of pay scales. The UGC recommended pay scales have always been adopted by the state government in toto in the past. Punjab is lagging behind in the adoption of 7th central pay scales as well as the 7th UGC pay scales and is probably the only state in the country which has not implemented these scales. The delinking of scales from 7th UGC scales will result in delinking of the higher education system of the state from the national higher education system said Dr Harmeet Singh Kingra president PAUTA.

      Ludhiana February 19The Ludhiana police claimed to have nabbed a man who opened fired at a youth about two years ago in Daba. The accused has been identified as Pawan Kumar of Gobind Nagar Shimlapuri. On November 22 2018 Sharanpal Singh Shalu (32) of Gobind Nagar had suffered bullet injuries on his head and later the Daba police had registered an attempt to murder case against the accused. Today acting on a tip-off the police conducted a raid at Bapu Market Lohara and nabbed him. The accused fired at the victim as the latter used to urinate in front of his shop and the duo also had a scuffle over the matter.

    • Man arrested with 38 bottles of syrup | Ludhiana NYOOOZ
      6 nabbed a drug peddler and recovered 38 bottles of banned syrup from him. Inspector Amandeep Singh Brar said acting on a tip-off a naka was laid on the Overlock road. The suspect was stopped for checking at the naka he added. Later in the presence of the ACP rank officer belongings of the suspect were checked which led to the recovery of banned syrup he said. The police also seized the motorcycle of the suspect he added.

      Ludhiana February 18The Ludhiana Rehri Phari members highlighted the problems being faced by vendors in the city during the meeting of Town Vending Committee of MC Ludhiana on Thursday. The meeting was also attended by ACP (Traffic) Gurdev Singh MC Zonal Commissioner Neeraj Jain and some councillors. Tiger Singh of Rehri Phari Federation said “We highlighted the problems being faced by the vendors. We have given nod that if any vendor is found without wearing ID card then action should be taken against that vendor. The meeting was arranged by Councillor Mamta Ashu so that our issues can be resolved.” — TNS

      Ludhiana February 18The police claims to have cracked a house theft case reported from Meharban on February 13. The suspect has been identified as Raju alias Bramanand of Uttar Pradesh. Kewal went to market along with his family and on returning home they found their servant missing the JCP said. On checking cash and valuables were also found missing the JCP added. Today a tip-off was received about suspect's whereabouts in Ludhiana and he was nabbed after conducting raid the JCP added.
    • AAP MLA among 40 booked for blocking highway | Ludhiana NYOOOZ
      Tribune News ServiceLudhiana February 18The police have registered a case against an MLA of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) among 40 persons for blocking the National Highway in Jagraon. When counting was almost complete AAP MLA with party workers went to the National Highway and blocked the stretch the SI added. Huge traffic jam was witnessed on the highway due to road blockade by AAP workers the SI said. AAP workers were told to clear the highway but they didn't budge the SI added. AAP workers violated instructions of the Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner issued under Section 144 CrPc and the Covid prevention guidelines the SI said.

      Ludhiana February 18An expectant woman gave birth to twins in the park of the Civil Hospital here this evening. She soon gave birth to the twins in the park with the help of women present around. After this the woman was admitted in the hospital. The weight of the twins was less and they had been referred to the PGI. “We could not get the ambulance and when I went inside the hospital to seek help she had already given birth” said her husband.

      Ludhiana February 18Days after the Municipal Corporation (MC) started removing “irregular” sewerage connections of colonies members of the Punjab Colonisers and Property Dealers Association met Mayor Balkar Singh Sandhu and opposed the action today. They demanded that the MC should not harass residents who got their plots regularised in colonies. Earlier the MC had served notices to colonisers to deposit sharing charges. The association joint secretary Jashanpreet Singh Chawla said “When the government is charging regularisation fee it should provide facilities as per the policy. We appeal to Mayor to resolve the matter and revoke notices.” — TNS

Earlier two teachers have tested positive and now the total positive cases from this school have reached 19. Today 46 persons tested positive while one lost his life. The total positive cases have reached 26412 while the death toll has gone to 1014 in the district. Five teachers from Government Senior Secondary School Gidderwindi including principal also tested positive for Covid in the past.

      Tribune News ServiceLudhiana February 17The body of a man who had killed his wife and a daughter at Sherpur Kalan near here was found in the canal at Doraha after five days. He allegedly committed suicide by jumping in the canal. Rupinder Kaur Sra ADCP 4 in a statement issued said on February 12 a man Pyara Singh had brutally killed his wife and a daughter. After killing the duo he had called his nephew and informed him that he had killed his wife and daughter and he was also going to commit suicide by jumping in the canal at Doraha. However his body was recovered today.

      Mandi Ahmedgarh Feb 17The Sadar police have initiated a probe into a portable scan centre conducting sex determination tests. A tout of the organisers of the mobile scan centre was nabbed by a joint team of senior functionaries of the Health and Family Welfare Departments of Punjab and Haryana. The Haryana team coordinated with authorities in the Health Department of Punjab Government following which a team of health officials from Sangrur was constituted. Dr Inderjit Singla district family welfare officer and Ahmedgarh SMO Pratibha Sahu Verma led the Punjab Health Department team. Further investigations revealed that Malkit Singh had already been booked under at least three similar cases at Ahmedgarh Siwan in Kaithal of Haryana.

Retired senior medical officer from the Civil Hospital Khanna Dr Rajinder Gulati received the second dose of the vaccine today and said he was feeling extremely fine after the second jab. “There were no after-effects since I got my first shot and today I got my second jab. Another HCW who got her second jab today said many HCWs were apprehensive about getting the vaccine but she mustered courage by putting aside all rumours and got herself vaccinated.
