      Ludhiana February 15The police have arrested one person Bal Mukand a resident of Rajiv Gandhi Colony Mundian Kalan and charged him under Sections 61 1 and 14 of the Excise Act. In another incident a police party led by SI Rajesh Kumar deployed on patrol duty at Jain Mandir received a tip-off that two notorious liquor smugglers had parked their Toyota Innova vehicle near Raj Model School in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and were waiting for their customers. The police conducted a raid at the place and seized two cases (24 bottles) of First Choice whisky and two cases of country liquor Sohni Rasbhari. The accused Ranvir Singh of Dugri and his accomplice Manga a resident of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar gave the police the slip. A case has been registered.
    • Encroachments continue unabated on Ludhiana roads | Ludhiana NYOOOZ
      Police officials along with MC staff had carried out a two-week awareness drive starting from February 1 2021 in the identified areas and had asked all shopkeepers vendors and other offenders to remove encroachments within 15 days. Talking to The Tribune Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) and nodal officer for clearing temporary encroachments from identified areas Deepak Pareek said the awareness and motivational drive against encroachments have had a limited effect and tough measures were called for. He said failure of the MC authorities to set up a vending zone for rehris and street vendors had also played a role in encroachments still continuing in many busy areas. Two-week awareness drive carried outTo tackle traffic congestion and other obstacles on city roads due to rampant temporary encroachments the city police had identified 100 odd stretches of busy roads and commercial hubs where concerted efforts were needed to be taken for the removal of encroachments.       Tribune News ServiceLudhiana February 14Prof (Dr) Yashpal Singh Malik Dean College of Animal Biotechnology Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) has been honoured with the prestigious “Fellow Award” of the Biotech Research Society India (BRSI) for his contributions and highly significant achievements in the field of animal biotechnology including development of state-of-art diagnostics for several pathogens affecting livestock and poultry. Prof Malik has developed several technologies and diagnostic kits and has two national patents to his credit. His contribution on zoonotic pathogens affecting both humans and animals was chosen for this prestigious award. Prof Malik earlier served as ICAR-National Fellow at the premier Indian Veterinary Research Institute Izatnagar. At the College of Animal Biotechnology GADVASU he is leading the team of experts in animal genomics molecular diagnostics and vaccinology where advance research facilitating the livestock sector is going on.

      Ludhiana February 14Shaan Kaur and Jiwanjot Kaur in the girls' section and Samarbir Singh in the boys' group clinched two titles each in the 23rd Ludhiana District Roller Skating Championship for Boys and Girls (Cadet) that began at the Leisure Valley Skating Rink Sarabha Nagar on Saturday. Shaan secured top positions in the 9-11 years' category in rink race IV and rink race VI while Jiwanjot proved her mettle by winning the first position in the rink I and rink II events in the same age group whereas Samarbir stamped his authority annexing titles in the 7-9 age group in rink IV and V events. Around 45 participants are vying for top honours in this two-day competition.       Tribune News ServiceLudhiana February 14A man was attacked by 13 persons at Bazigar Basti in Daad village near here. The victim suffered injuries and rushed to a hospital for treatment. The booked accused have been identified as Sunil Chand Vijay Mundri Ashok Pyar Ram Tehal Singh Kasturi Lal Kaka Ram Kumar Pamma Raman Madhu Ram and Karma all residents of Daad village. After repaying the amount when he went to take back the documents the blank cheque the accused started arguments with the victim and attacked him. Investigating officer ASI Om Prakash said a case under varius sections of the IPC was registered against the accused and raids were being conducted to nab them.

Competition of children was also held at the Air Force station and they were also awarded prizes. An interaction session on road safety was also organised at Punjab Roadways office where drivers and attendants were made aware about the road safety. Drivers were requested to follow the traffic rules and road safety norms so that accidents on road can be avoided. Notably the Ludhiana police was holding road safety and traffic awareness activities in city daily to observe the Road Safety Month started on January 18.

      Sports CorrespondentLudhiana February 13The Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) an affiliated unit of the Punjab Cricket Association will organise trials to select players (U-19) on February 15 at GRD Global Education Institute Hambran Road. Satish Mangal president LDCA said the trials were being held for the cricket session 2020-21 in accordance with the decision of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) since the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournaments were suspended midway last year due to Covid-19 and now the board has directed the state associations to instruct the district bodies to hold the selection trials afresh so that the tournaments could be accomplished. Players born on or after September 1 2001 are eligible for these trials. The selected players will represent Ludhiana district in the state championship he said.

      Our CorrespondentPayal February 13Harsimran Kaur Jhajh a Class VII student Delhi Public School Khanna had fetched laurels to her town and the institute after she won four gold medals at the district level 10-m air rifle shooting competitions in Under 19 Junior 21 and Senior 21 besides her own U-17 category organised by the International Shooting Sports Federation at Ludhiana recently. She had won four gold medals in the 29th Ludhiana District Air Rifle Shooting Championship and aims more positions at the international-level events. “I had been able to beat contestants in higher categories due to technical and scientific training by her coach Parvej Josh at the Best Shooter Shooting Academy Patiala and persistent motivation by her parents” she said. “Having succeeded in paving the foundation in 10-m shooting competitions I wish to explore chances in other events too. I also intend to strike a balance between sports and academic studies as both are complementary to each other for overall success at international level” said Jhajh.

Hypersensitive polling stations in AhmedgarhPerusal of records revealed that six polling stations had been declared hypersensitive in Ahmedgarh. These included Government Elementary School Amarpura Kennedy High School Sanatan Vidya Mandir School PUNSUP office Jagera Road Government Primary School Vishawkarma Mandir and Islamia School. At Raikot only Government Middle School Eidgah Road has been declared hypersensitive. At Jagraon Guru Nanak Bal Vikas Kender Malak Road Sanmati Vimal Jain School Saint Mahapragya School Raikot Road Government Science and Research College and Lajpat Rai Kanya High School Shashtri Nagar have been declared hypersensitive.

Now the total positive cases in Ludhiana are 26283 and 1013 persons have lost their lives since March 2020. Three more students from Government Senior Secondary School Sekhewal have tested positive and with this the total number of students who are positive from this school has reached 15. Shopkeepers alleged that registry of shops was not being done even after nearly two years of getting possession. They also blamed the company for imposing 'unexplainable' maintenance charges and electricity charges. He said there was no problem related to maintenance electricity charges waterlogging and sewerage. He said electricity charges were collected as per the government norms.
    • 18 ventilators gather dust in absence of employees | Ludhiana NYOOOZ
      Manav ManderTribune News ServiceLudhiana February 13Ventilators at the Civil Hospital have started gathering dust as the ICU facility has been suspended. It was in October last year that the hospital had got 18 ventilators operational and catered to critically ill patients during the pandemic. In March 2020 a woman from Amarpura who was Covid positive died a few hours after reaching Rajindra Hospital. She was referred to Patiala as she was in need of ventilator and Civil Hospital Ludhiana was not having the same. After the incident the demand for installation of ventilators at the Civil Hospital was raised and the hospital got 18 ventilators and afterwards there were negligible referrals as staff were also available.
