Out of these 50,848 cases, a total of 34,729 cases have been reported in August only and 962 out of 1,348 deaths have been reported in August itself.

In terms of tests per million of population, as of August 26, Punjab had conducted 31,647 tests per million population, higher than the national average of 28,639, but lesser than seven other states, including neighbouring Haryana.

Locals say patients’ complaints of lack of food, sanitation, inadequate medical attention in these govt facilities have instilled fear in them; in some villages, resolutions have been passed against testing.

Out of the today 43 deaths on Monday, 11 were reported from Ludhiana, eight from Mohali, six from Jalandhar, four from Gurdaspur, three each from Kapurthala, Mansa and Patiala and one each from Amritsar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Fazilka, Nawanshahr and Sangrur.

Nine deaths were reported in Ludhiana, four in Amritsar, three in Bathinda, two each in Kapurthala and Jalandhar and one each in Barnala, Sangrur, Mohali and Gurdaspur, as per a medical bulletin.

Punjab’s Director, Industries, Sibin C said the move to set up testing centre in Ludhiana would encourage more industrialists to go for coveralls/PPEs. "Since the testing facility is being provided at the doorstep, more manufacturers would show interest in the coveralls," he said.

Ludhiana has the maximum number of Covid patients in Punjab and has reported the maximum number of deaths due to the virus as well. Despite this, the district has been reeling under a shortage of ‘level 3’ beds (meant for critical patients).

The girl was shifted to the isolation ward of Civil Hospital in Ludhiana on August 6 after she was tested positive for coronavirus at PGIMER, Chandigarh.
