The total positive cases in the district are now 25361 while 984 persons have lost their lives to the virus since March. Those who tested positive today included 17 referred from the OPDs 19 from flu corners six contacts of positive persons one healthcare worker while the tracing of six was on. The total number of patients related to Ludhiana is 25361 while 3837 patients belong to other districts/states. A total of 2107 samples of the suspected patients were sent for testing today and their results were expected shortly.

Mann made 401 runs of 245 balls to help Ludhiana score 636 runs. Notably Jalandhar scored 192 runs in the first innings. Tribune News ServiceLudhiana January 20A major fire broke out in a house in Janakpuri here on Wednesday morning. Four children who were present in the house had a miraculous escape. A neighbour broke the door and entered the house and took the children out of the house safely. She said when she reached home she was shocked to see that the ground floor of the house was destroyed in the fire but her children were safe as they were saved by her neighbour. About the cause of the fire the officials said a blast seemed to have occurred in the gas geyser.

Ludhiana January 21The Ludhiana police today carried out a special checking at the city railway station ahead of the Republic Day celebrations. Police personnel along with a dog squad checked each nook and corner of the railway station. Recently Commissioner of Police Rakesh Agrawal also held an online meeting with all rank officials and told them to increase patrolling in their areas to prevent any untoward incident ahead of the Republic Day function. The police told to put up random nakas in their areas and check all suspicious persons. Sources said now police personnel in civvies had already started roaming in city markets to keep a tab on anti-social elements.

It was given to him by Rajnath Singh Defence Minister and Nitin Gadkari Minister of Road Transport and Highways. His work pertaining to traffic management and road safety was appreciated by the Union government. The ACP has also received Police Medal for Meritorious Services and Chief Minister's Medal for Outstanding Devotion to Duty for his services in managing the city's traffic. During the pandemic the ACP served food to the needy in the lockdown and ensured proper implementation of the Covid-19 guidelines.

Mahesh SharmaRaikot January 20Continuing his mission to develop 1000 mini and micro forests by planting one crore saplings of diverse species of herbs shrubs and trees by close of the 2021 Rohit Mehra an IRS officer has roped in constituents of Municipal Council Mullanpur led by Akash Bansal (IAS) to transform a 55000 square feet garbage dump yard into a mini forest by planting 1000 saplings. The venture to transform the dump yard into a mini forest was launched during a campaign launched against non-biodegradable wastes and use of banned polythene bags by the Mullanpur civic body led by executive officer Akash Bansal recently. “Having found the garbage dump yard a nuisance for residents of the region we decided to develop a mini forest by planting saplings of various species of herbs shrubs and trees by involving all constituents of the civic body and other NGOs of the area” said Rohit Mehra. Mehra has already made it to the Limca Book of Records for making the Ludhiana Income Tax Building as the first vertical garden in the region. JP Singh president District Basketball Association Ludhiana (DBAL) said that the cut off date for eligible players in the U-17 category was January 1 2004 and those born on or after January 1 2002 could participate in the U-19 age group. Entry fee for each participating team is Rs500 and the district clubs can field their teams. The schools and colleges can send a maximum two teams in each age group in the boys and girls sections. Ludhiana January 19Seeking regularisation of jobs for contractual sanitation workers the Municipal Employees Sangarsh Committee here today submitted a memorandum to the chairman of the Punjab State Safai Karamchari Commission Punjab. He said these sanitation workers had performed their job in a commendable manner during the lockdown. The committee members also demanded that the safai karamcharis and sewermen should be given the status of “safai sainik”. All sanitation workers should be provided free health insurance cards so that they could get treatment at any hospital they added. They also sought action against officials concerned of the MC and Employees Provident Fund Organisation as provident fund was not deposited into the accounts of a number of sanitation workers between September 2014 and October 2018.

Trials for the aspiring talented players (U-16) would be held on January 21-22 from 2.30 pm onwards. Likewise the selection process for U-19 players would be conducted on January 23-24 from 2.30 pm onwards they said. Players born on or after September 1 2006 are eligible to attend the selection trials in the U-16 and those born on or after September 1 2002 can participate in the U-19 category. The selected cricketers will undergo physical training and skills coaching up-gradation under the guidance and supervision of experts.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pragya Jain led the meeting that was attended by other traffic police officials. Extensive studies had been done on 10 black spots and measures were shortlisted to convert them into white spots with liaison and cooperation of various agencies said Pragya Jain. She said: “Measures include structural changes installing road safety measures removing encroachments and wrongful parking as per the specific needs of a particular black spot.”She said the help of other departments would also be sought to convert black spots into white spots. The ADCP said the event would be organised on the stretch from the Ghumar Mandi chowk to Aarti chowk.

Kuldip BhatiaLudhiana January 19At last contractors infamous for pooling to secure works at higher rates have succeeded in roping in officials of the engineering branch of the Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) here to call their tunes and quite a few of them have also succeeded in securing development works of the Trust at some 15 per cent or even higher rates as compared to previous works of similar nature. At the same time some other contractors were said to have offered bids for works beyond their capacity with the tacit approval of the officials concerned. In other words with the pooling by intending contractors and offering bids after reaching an understanding the LIT was incurring 15 to 20 per cent extra expenditure on development works and the booty was obviously being shared between 'benefitting contractors' and 'obliging officials' of the Trust. It has also been alleged that with the contractors being paid extra money (by way of higher rates) the rate of commission being offered to officials and employees at various levels had also gone up. In this game of 'mutual back scratching' the LIT officials and the contractors were riding the proverbial gravy train while the precious financial resources of the Trust and public funds were being squandered away.
