      Tribune News ServiceLudhiana January 9A Ludhiana family was allegedly duped by a tout outside the Regional Passport Office (RPO) in Chandigarh where they had gone to get their passports updated. Assuring the family to get the work done the tout took Rs 20000 from members of the family. “Outside the RPO office they came in contact with a tout Dimple running a juice/ tea/coffee shop in the nearby block who misguided them and took Rs 20000 from them on the pretext of getting their job done” the RPO told The Tribune on Saturday. The RPO has advised the public to avoid such touts and directly contact the passport office if not personally then even through Twitter e-mail or WhatsApp video call. Pertinently the Chandigarh RPO was on top in the country in handling grievances and their redress.

      Tribune News ServiceLudhiana January 9The Khanna City police and Ludhiana rural police registered cases of fraud against five persons who duped residents of over Rs 38 lakhs on the pretext of providing them government jobs. In the first case four persons were booked by the Khanna City police on the charges of fraud and criminal conspiracy. The accused have been identified as Bhupesh Kumar of Bathinda Jasvir Singh Jobanpreet and Manpreet Singh. The complainant Sapinder Singh a resident of Ajnala Amritsar told the police that the accused took Rs 30 lakh from him for providing a government job in the Mandi Board Department.       Our CorrespondentRaikot December 8Office-bearers and activists of various social and educational organisations took part in a 'shramdan' and marched through localities of Mullanpur town to clear the region of single-use plastic items and polythene bags during the ongoing drive launched against the violation of the plastic ban in the region. Executive officer Akash Bansal (IAS) and Municipal Council president Telu Ram Bansal led the activists during the awareness rally that passed through various localities of Main Market New Grain Market Area and Model Town. Convener of the event Manohar Singh said constituents of various educational institutes social organisations and the civic body had organised a rally to spread awareness about causes and consequences of degradation of environment due to the use of single-use plastic items and polythene bags. The authorities seized illegal stocks of polythene bags from many vendors and shopkeepers and penalty was also imposed on the violators. Supporters of the mission 'Plastic Free Area' were given appreciation letters by the Municipal Council.

      Ludhiana January 8The Municipal Corporation Ludhiana is planning to set-up a sub-zone for collection of property tax water supply charges and other facilities for some wards at Dhandari here. He said: “We had set up a trial run for the collection of property tax last year. Now a proposal has been made to set up a sub-zone office at Dhandari on GT Road here.”“The work to set up the sub-zone office is likely to be started there. A suvidha centre will be set up at the sub-zone office. The authorities have given consent for the opening of the sub-zone office” he added.

She has been awarded a gold medal a winner's trophy and a cash prize of Rs15000 from the foundation. She has also attained a zonal rank of 10 in the second level of the English Olympiad conducted by SOF (Science Olympiad Foundation) and received a voucher worth Rs 1000 for the same. In the Olympiads conducted by the Silverzone Foundation in 2019-20 she has won gold medals in Reasoning and Aptitude Informatics and Hindi and a silver medal in English. MC Commissioner Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal has issued an order in this regard. Mayor Balkar Singh had earlier given instructions to set up the branch. Mayor Sandhu said they had taken the move of setting up the PR branch so that the people could be informed about the activities done by the MC.     • Woman among four booked for fraud | Ludhiana NYOOOZ
      Tribune News ServiceLudhiana January 7Four persons have been booked by the Samrala and Ludhiana police in separate cases for committing fraud worth lakhs. In the first case the Samrala police registered a fraud and criminal conspiracy case against a woman and her husband for duping a resident of Rs 9.57 lakh on the pretext of giving double returns in some investment scheme. The suspects have been identified as Sarabjit Singh and his wife Karamjit Kaur residents of Paprodi village near Samrala. The woman alleged that the suspects had failed to double the money and when they were asked to return the same they refused. The police said after registering a case of fraud further probe had been started in the case.

The campaign was launched along with other schemes by Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh through videoconferencing from Chandigarh. Sports kits to five youth clubs from urban areas of the district were handed over on Thursday. Speaking on the occasion Sukhwinder Singh Bindra Chairman Punjab Youth Development Board said a total of 2500 sports kits would be distributed during the campaign. Another function would be held here on January 28 during which youth clubs of rural areas of Ludhiana would be covered he said.

      Ludhiana January 7Players and organisers of Jarkhar Hockey Academy observed the 37th death anniversary of hockey star Olympian and former captain of World Cup winning Indian team Surjit Singh Randhawa. Flowers were placed at the life-size statue of Surjit Singh installed at the stadium. Jagroop Singh Jarkhar director of the academy recalled the achievements of the star player. Gurwinder Singh Jarkhar (Guri) a talented and upcoming hockey player of the academy was honoured with the “Man of the Year” award. An exhibition match between Olympian Surjit XI and Olympian Prithipal Singh XI was also held on the occasion which remained tied at 3-3.

While volunteers led by Bhartia Kissan Union (Ekta-Ugrahan) office-bearers Balwinder Singh Billu and Mistry Avtar Singh have been camping on Tikri Border to undertake fabrication of first lot of ten lavatories NRIs Anand Pal Singh Lail and Harbans Singh have come forward to give fiscal support to the initiative. Gurjit Singh Victor coordinator of the event said the decision to erect lavatories on Tikri Border was taken after women protesters experienced problems during their stay there. Victor said work on erection of more lavatories would be continued for which an amount of Rs 5 lakh had been earmarked. Organisers have also deployed volunteers who would keep the lavatories clean and fresh besides ensuring availability of water soap and other materials required for hygienic maintenance of the paraphernalia.

    • EPFO settles over 1 5 lakh claims worth Rs 432 crore | Ludhiana NYOOOZ
      Tribune News ServiceLudhiana January 6The Ludhiana regional office of the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has settled over 1.5 lakh claims amounting to over Rs 432 crore this fiscal so far. Of these over 1.23 lakh claims were settled within three days of their receipt. Stating this here on Wednesday Regional Provident Fund Commissioner-I (RPFC) Dheeraj Gupta said a total of 150414 claims amounting Rs 432.34 crore were settled between April 1 and January 4 of which 123940 claims were settled within three days of their receipt which was 82 per cent of the total claims settled. The settled claims included 29773 Covid claims disbursing a sum of Rs 54.73 crore while the rest were non-Covid claims amounting to Rs 377.61 crore. In this category Sodhi Singh was awarded the best worker of the week for maximum times.
